Earlier this morning, I tended to the Chief Executive my resignation from the post of Chief Secretary for administration of the Hong Kong SAR government and requested him to seek the approval of my resignation by the Central People’s Government under article of 48 (5) of the basic law.
I told the Chief Executive in my resignation letter that there’s only one reason for me to resign at this juncture, and that is, if my resignation is approved by the Central People’s Government, I intend to prepare to contest in the upcoming Chief Executive election.
The task‘s been an honor and privilege to serve the people of Hong Kong for over 36 years. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the incumbent Chief Executive and the former CEs for their support and all the politically appointed officials for their teamwork cooperation , the civil service colleagues for their dedication and hard work and many members of the legislative council, district councils, professional institutions and NGOs and many civic-minded individuals who have served on various government boards and committees during my tenure in various capacities over the years.
I will take leave from tomorrow and if my resignation is approved by the Central People’s Government, I will find an opportunity to share with you my next step, thank you very much.
